December 1st - Romania National Day

December 1st was declared "Romania's National Day/ Ziua nationala a Romaniei" in 1990. Named also Great Union Day / Ziua Marii Uniri, this day memorializes the unification of Transylvania and all the historical Romanian territories into 'Greater Romania' in 1918, under the tricolor Romanian flag.

The Wallachian prince Michael the Brave / Mihai Viteazul, is famous for briefly first uniting the three Principalities of Romania in May 1600 (the unification lasted for less than a year) : Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania and the dream of a unified Romania, linking all the historical Romanian territories, remained until our days.
"Starting today, you receive the command over the centuries: sit together those who have only one mother: Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia / De astăzi, veţi primi porunca cea din veac: să stea laolaltă cei dintr-o singură mamă: Ţara Românească, Ţara Ardealului şi Ţara Moldovei!" After more than 250 years, in 1857, the "Ad-hoc Assemblies" of Wallachia (Bucharest) and Moldavia (Iasi)  unanimously decided to unite the Wallachia and Moldavia principalities into one single state. On January 17, 1859, in Moldavia and on February 5, in Wallachia, the Romanians elected Colonel Alexandru Ioan Cuza as common ruler, achieving the union of the two Principalities in Romanian Nation State . The name of Romania was taken in 1962. In 1878 - In the Treaty of Berlin, Romania was recognized as an independent state by the Great Powers and Dobrojea with the Delta of the Danube became a county of Romania.
The hymn when Wallachia and Moldavia united to form the Principality of Romania in 1859 became the Vasile Alexandri's poem "Hora of the Union/ Hora Unirii":

In 1918, at the end of the First World War, the Romanians of Bessarabia and Bucovina voted to unite their provinces to Romania. In Transilvania, The National Assembly (within over 100000 delegates) called on 1st of December at Alba Iulia, voted as well, to unite Transylvania and Banat with Romania. Thus Romania achieved its greatest territorial extent, with the unification of all Romanians in a single state, with the annexation of Transylvania, Banat, Bessarabia and Bucovina as counties of Romania. With the uniting of all the historical Romanian territories, was established Greater Romania - great surge in Romania's history.  The sovereignty of Romania over Transylvania was recognized after the "Treaty of Versailles" was signed in June 1919, and the new borders between the Hungary and Romania were defined in The treaties of St. Germain(1919) and Trianon (1920).

The December 1st  is usually celebrated as public holiday in Romania with a military parade in Bucharest, troops which will march under the "Triumph Arch / Arcul de Triumf",  large manifestations in all big cities across the country, and manifestations in Romanian Embassies.

Very important for the Romanian people are the Concerts organized in Moldova   by the Romanian Embassy in Moldova and the Romanian Cultural Institute in Chisinau and Balti.  Last year, in 2009, was the first time when the Moldovan Leaders held official celebrations in Chisinau on Romania's National Day and reaffirmed the closer ties between Romania and Moldova,  two countries which share same language and history. I read an interesting article about the "latent integration" between Romania and Moldova, in which  Bogdan Tsirdya ( from Moldova) make a detailed analysis of the actual political climate in Moldova. According to him, maybe the "New Greater Romania" will be a confederation of "Two Romanian States"!?.

Have a Happy National Day, Romania! And for all the Romanians from all over the world: happiness, good health and enjoy a patriotic Romanian song played by Fuego & Irina Loghin: "We are always Romanians / Suntem romani mereu".

Thanks to Fuego for video

"We are always Romanians / Suntem Romani mereu"  lyrics:

We are always Romanians
For better and for worse
We were here for many thousands of years
We have been living like brothers
Together with Carpathians
And we have not missed enemies
We are living in goodness
And helping each other in all
We have been Romanians for many thousands of years.
Re: God in Heaven
has been decided to place here for us
The Hills with Mountains and Valleys
He is watching us
and is blessing us
Here is "The Chosen Place"

You, Greater Romania,
Looks to the Sun,
But someone still weep tears.
A bird which has been kidnapped
by force and was wounded,
Is our Sister, Basarabia.
And even it seems abandoned
It is not defeated
and God will protect and save it.
Re: God in Heaven
has been decided to place here for us
The Hills with Mountains and Valleys
He is watching us
and is blessing us
Here is "The Chosen Place"

Transylvania from over the mountains
Many of Them want to be their,
But you are ours not theirs.
Transylvania with the proud name
and with famous people,
Surrounded by the Tricolor (Romanian flag)
You are the heart that beats
strong and the heart that crosses
Over-time the Romanians minds.
Re: God in Heaven
has been decided to place here for us
The Hills with Mountains and Valleys
He is watching us
and is blessing us
Here is "The Chosen Place"
Here is "The Chosen Place"

Suntem romani mereu
La bine si la greu,
Aici de multe mii de ani
Noi am trait ca frati
Alaturi cu Carpatii
Si n-am dus lipsa de dusmani
Traim în bunatate
Si ne ajutam în toate
Români de multe mii de ani.
Re:Dumnezeu de sus,
Locul aici l-a pus.
Pe dealuri cu munti cu ses,
El ne-a privegheat,
Si ne-a mângâiat,
Asta e Locul Ales!

Tu Românie mare,
Priveste catre soare,
Tot lacrimeaza cineva.
O pasare rapita,
Cu forta si ranita,
E sora Basarabia.
Si chiar de-i parasita
Ea nu este înfrânta
Ca Dumnezeu o va salva.
Re:Dumnezeu de sus,
Locul aici L-a pus.
Pe dealuri cu munti cu ses,
El ne-a privegheat,
Si ne-a mângâiat,
Asta e Locul Ales!

Ardeal de peste munti,
Pe tine te vor multi,
Tu esti al nostru nu al lor.
Ardeal cu mândru nume,
Cu oameni cu renume,
Înconjurat de tricolor.
Esti inima ce bate
Puternic si strabate
În cugetul românïlor.

Re:Dumnezeu de sus,
Locul aici L-a pus.
Pe dealuri cu munti cu ses,
El ne-a privegheat,
Si ne-a mângâiat,
Asta e Locul Ales!
Asta e Locul Ales!
